As gold prospectors flocked to California in the 1840s it quickly became a key destination thanks to its proximity to both the American River and the Transcontinental Railroad. As the Gold Rush fever cooled, many prospectors settled in this fertile area and became wine and hop growers. Some time later it became the home of the early aeronautical industry, and now a technology hub for the most prestigious science and medicine University, UC Davis.
